Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

I'm a beginner. Can I participate?

Absolutely! RedBrickHacks is designed to be beginner-friendly. We have special prizes for first-time hackers (12 Instax Mini 11 cameras with accessories!), provide guidance throughout the building phase, and have a supportive Discord community to help you learn. Many past winners were first-timers.

How much does it cost?

Nothing! RedBrickHacks is 100% free to join. If you're selected for finals, we cover accommodation and food at Ashoka University. We also offer travel grants (up to ₹5,000 for students outside Delhi NCR) to reduce financial barriers.

Can I participate solo or do I need a team?

Both! You can participate solo or with a team of up to 4 members. While diverse teams (designer + developers + subject expert) tend to perform better, plenty of solo hackers have won prizes. After registration, you can use our Discord to find teammates if you'd like.

Who can participate?

Any student currently enrolled in an Indian university who is 18 years or older. This includes undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD students across all disciplines — not just computer science!

What do I need to submit?

For the online round, you'll submit: (1) A proposal describing your solution, (2) An MVP/prototype, (3) A GitHub repository with your code (commit history matters!), and (4) A 2-minute demo video. Our custom portal (not Devpost) will guide you through the process.

What is the Hardware Track?

If your project for any of the three SDG tracks involves a hardware prototype, you're automatically eligible for bonus hardware prizes. You'll get access to our 4,500 sqft makerspace with 3D printers (FDM, SLA, SLS), laser cutters, CNC machines, a wood workshop, and electronics stations. Both winner AND runner-up receive a 1-month maker residency with ₹1L project budget.

How do travel grants work?

If selected for finals, you can apply for travel grant reimbursement: up to ₹2,500 for Delhi NCR students, up to ₹5,000 for students from outside NCR. We reimburse train or bus travel (not flights). Email redbrickhacks+travel@ashoka.edu.in for details.

What is the WildCard entry?

One spot at finals is reserved for an exceptional creator or visual storyteller. To apply: tag #RedBrickHacksWildCard on social media showcasing your prior work, then email us with subject "Wild Card Entry" including your work portfolio and your plan for the finals. Only 1 spot available!

When will I know if I'm selected for finals?

Finalists will be announced on January 17, 2026. You'll receive an email notification. You must RSVP by January 21 to confirm your spot — if you miss the deadline, your spot goes to the waitlist.
